Research for Music Video: Reflection on Progress

Research for Music Video: Skills audit

During AS Media, we had to research genres and the conventions and representations shown in teen film openings. This was mostly through watching film openings and recreating one - "The Breakfast Club". Then we had to come up with our own idea of a teen film opening and plan, film and edit it. We also had to advertise our film opening, and used social media to do this. We will be using social media again this year to promote our music video.

My skills in research have grown especially as in the A2 year we are making three products instead of one which means more research across all areas in more depth. Our first piece of research has been music videos, researching music videos has involved looking at the first music video, existing music videos, theorists such as Andrew Goodwin and Carol Vernallis and many pre production techniques.

Other examples of synergy from other artists

Music album 'Loud' by Rihanna

California King Bed - a song from 'Loud'

The theme of red (key element of synergy) can be seen in both the music video and the album cover; red hair, the special effects are used to help make the music video romantic (lighting/bedding/sky).

As the album cover photo shows Rihanna with bare shoulders, she is very simple and bare in the music video, The make up look is very similar in both the album cover and music video.

Research for Music Video: Evaluation of our lip sync tutorial

We followed Vernalli's theory in the post production quite well.

  • We edited the 50 second clip to the beat of the song.
  • We used obvious edits such as fast motion, slow motion and a layered filter which our peers found went well with the song.
  • We also used a number of base tracks, including close ups which are very effective and important in music videos.
However we had a few problems in post production as some parts are out of sync, this is very obvious when it is shown on a big screen so we must make sure that our music video is in sync.

From the lip syncing tutorial I have learnt about markers and base tracks, markers are used to mark the beat and a prominent word, in this case we used the word "babe" as this is significant. By using markers it allows for us to edit, add in base tracks and make sure it is in sync.
