Evaluation Question 1

Q) In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media products use and develop the conventions of real media products. They don't challenge the conventions because the pop genre uses very common and obvious aspects for the music videos, digipaks and advertisements. For example, very bright colours and positive vibes to promote a youthful life etc. So to follow these conventions, we used bright colours and the illustration of youth in our music video.

A similar female pop artist also uses bright colours like this in her music videos and ancillary too. She uses it to portray 'fun' and a very 'immature' theme. (Cher Lloyd)

The video that influenced me the most with filming and editing techniques was Ariana Grande - The Way because it was creative, easy to manipulate or play about with and followed the conventions of a pop genre music video. The part that attracted me the most as someone who would also be seen as the typical target audience for this genre was the projection scene. This was used in our music video.

How conventional was my ancillary work? - The digipak

The way Taylor Swift has her long body on the cover shows her female structure and really gives the album the control she needs as the artist. It emphasises that it is her music and she is the main artist here. Most female pop singers have albums with themselves on the album covers because it emphasises independence and female authority.

Nicki Minaj is also the centre of attention on most of her album covers - again, female pop singers do this a lot. I did this for my album cover too. My artist is the main attraction on the album.

How conventional was my ancillary work? - The advertisement

Katy Perry and Rihanna both also have them as the main attraction of their advertisements and I made sure mine was too. The background was of my artist as well and I made sure the conventions of the album cover being in the advertisement was there. i didn't have a release date but I did have the networks where the music would be available. E.g, iTunes and Amazon etc. The conventions were followed very closely and clearly and I kept my digipak and advertisement linked too, using fonts and colours.

Overall, I think the music video is very conventional because it follows the typical pop genre conventions and makes it clear to the audience that it is for young teenage girls. The research and feedback I have got has helped me to fix any mistakes or things that needed improving to make the music video even more conventional. The music video was a huge success and there may be small mistakes, but as a whole, it followed the genre of pop very closely and clearly.

Evaluation Question 2

Q) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The synergy and how I incorporated it into the music video and ancillary work

Would the target audience be attracted to them and why?

I think our target would be attracted to the synergy we've used because it is girly, fun and very bright - this is what young teenage girls like. They are in the phase of life where makeup and doing yourself up is really important so the music video really emphasises how important it is to look nice but to also feel comfortable in what you're wearing, or in your own skin. The ancillary work I've produced then continues this because we still see a really pretty and stylish font with lots of red lips and the artist very happy and jolly - enjoying her life clearly. Most female pop artists have something that signifies their identity which allows the target audience to recognise who they are instantly.

Work that influenced me:

Cher Lloyd, Rita Ora and many other famous female pop artists use red lipstick which really makes them bold and stand out which is what we wanted our new upcoming artist to do.

Ariana Grande has her hair in the same style in most of her music videos and although it isn't a big deal, it helped us realise that it is a huge part of synergy too, otherwise our artist will look out of place and different if she has loads of hairstyles in just the music video alone. We did use a different hairstyle on the digipak though but only because it makes it slightly different and gives her a bit of edge. rather than just basing the whole thing around the one music video.

Therefore, when making the digipak and advert I made sure my artist stood out but still followed typical conventions for female pop artists. Even though every artist is different in their own way, they follow the same or similar customs which make them all one thing - POP ARTISTS.

Evaluation Question 3

Q) How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Using Final Cut Pro - Production (Music Video)

This technology was very important whilst making the music video because it had everything we needed to make sure the music video was edited the right way and it actually made it a lot easier. There were specific tools designed for music video making too. I used the tools to crop, edit, slow down, speed up, and add other files such as the track used for the music video.

The use of Final Cut Pro made it look professional and allowed me to see mistakes because we could watch the music video whilst in the process, noticing what was good and what wasn't so good about it so far. It also allowed our audience to watch it whilst we were editing to see any parts they liked or didn't like too.

Using the internet - Research and Planning (Using the internet)

I used Google to research the target audience for our genre and the genre itself. I even looked at reviews for pop artists from very popular music pages such as the BBC and actual artists' official websites. I also used social networking sites such as Twitter and Instagram to keep our teachers updated with what we were doing.

YouTube was also used to look at very conventional and typical pop videos to look at the way they edit their videos and what special effects (if any) they use. It also helped me with costume ideas etc for our performer.

Using Photoshop Elements - Production (Ancillary)

Photoshop played a huge part in the editing process with the ancillary work. It allowed me to remove backgrounds from photos and add text with specific and stylish fonts. It also gave me the chance to make the digipak look more realistic and precise in size using the 2 panel CD template. I used Photoshop Elements 9. For the advertisement, I actually just used Microsoft Powerpoint because the pictures were already made and edited. I added borders, a bit of filter effects and placed text.

Equipment - Filming

We used the Dedo light kit for extra lighting when filming to make sure it was consistent through out the whole music video too.

Using the dedo light allowed us to film even on a different day but still have the same lighting, even if it was less sunny due to weather problems.

The Dedo light in use in the music video.

We used a professional camera for HD 1080p videos. We used the microphone that came with it to pick up sounds, we used the focus (manual and auto) when necessary and we also used the technology on the camera to look back at the media we had just filmed. We saved the media onto memory cards that were put into slots on the side of the camera. We used the zooming lens to have different shot types. (Close-ups and mid close-ups).

Zooming into the artist for a close-up
Then zooming out for a mid shot

Evaluation Question 4

Q) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Cinema screening feedback

Student A, aged 18 who is a fan of artists such as Beyonce, Cher Lloyd and Katy Perry. Student A mentioned the lip scene - which was actually very popular through out the whole of the target audience. Student A mentioned the slow part of the song and said the performance was excellent and the performer looked like she knew what she was doing. This made me feel like i did a good job as a director and camera person too.

Some of the audience feedback came back with problems with the camera. They said a filter should've been added to make it look less like we just used an ordinary camera and to make it look more professional. So maybe we could have spent more time on editing too. This allowed the group to be reminded that we spent so much time on filming and re-shooting, that we didn't spend enough time on editing and adding filters etc.

Rough cut feedback

Nadia said the rough cut was good and her favourite part was the scene of projection using the lips on the screen. She did mention that the motorbike scene had different lighting compared to the rest of the video so maybe it's not that good to keep. Another thing Nadia mentioned was that in some scenes our performer looked away.

This feedback really helped us to remove or add scenes that weren't good enough and it gave us time to go back and re-film if we needed to. The feedback was honest and in detail which was helpful too. Audience feedback allowed me to look at maybe some mistakes as the camera person was making. For example, making sure the artist was always looking at the camera when filming - this would've saved time and energy rather than re-shooting several times.

Ancillary work feedback

Ismail said the use of red and white was creative and he liked the look of it too. He liked how the CD on the outside panel had a drop shadow on it because it stood out and seemed more 3D and realistic. The use of the images were creative too and worked well together. This audience feedback has helped me to look at not just the good parts of the digipak, but also parts where improvement could've been added.

Ismail also mentioned that I could've added the artist's website and social media links on the advertisement to really get the word around through the target audience to keep updated. i could've added the Instagram link too. However, he loved the use of the reviews on the advert because it seemed realistic and professional. The layout was planned out well.

From my audience feedback. I've learnt that their opinion is actually very important because if it doesn't engage them, an artist wouldn't get any recognition or enough recognition for their new album. The audience don't need to practice what they like - they just know what they like and it is clear through my digipak, that I used the right research for my target audience.

Without audience feedback and research, it would've been impossible to know exactly what the audience was looking for. Therefore, it wouldn't have been successful. After producing the work, the feedback helped me to find out if I listened to the audience from the research and if it was effective.

if there was no research or feedback, the music video or ancillary work wouldn't have attracted the audience the way I needed it to. Also, when the audience notice the conventions and things that they specifically look for, it shows that we did listen and applied their thoughts on it.

Self Reflection on Progress (All Blog Health Checks)

03/11/14
For the blogging health check 1, I received 19 out of 20 which was the target I set myself, and I aim to get full marks for the next health check.
Rebecca gave my current grade at A* which was also my personal target grade. I feel like previous reflection on progress blog posts also helped me achieve this because I looked at what I was doing well and targets at every step.
From the feedback I've gathered all my posts are always detailed very well and presented well too. I have reflected on feedback all the time which has increased the quality of my blog posts too. To carry on getting an A and hopefully finish Media with a secure A*.

01/12/14
Unfortunately, I've been over-blogging and getting to 150 very soon. So I need to make sure I don't make pointless blogs that aren't really relevant. For example, how I changed the blog design. Therefore, I removed the blog posts that are not relevant to the production and research of our music video.

I am happy with my grade and know that if I keep focused and keeping going how I am, I can end the year with a solid A*.

11/01/15

I need to keep going how I am and make sure the quality of my evaluation is the same (or better, if possible) as my production and research work for the music video.

I think I need more vlogs of me alone and more videos/projects rather than just words and pictures though. Other than that, I'm certain I can keep it up.

Production of Ancillary Work: Screenshots of work in progress

Added the photos, making sure the background was removed so it was white. I had to add PNG pictures for the lips and bar code etc.
The bar code and record label logo was placed on the back of the CD cover. The small print was also added for copyright etc.
The second part for the digipak - the actual CD.
The circle had to fit into the square perfectly as a conventional size for CDs.
I used a black one at first
Placing a white one on top gave it the illusion of an outline for the CD
I had to make sure the hole for the CD was perfectly in the middle
Put the lips behind the circle so it would be cut out when made. It is the synergy and makes it recognisable when the audience see it.
The same font as the front with the same positioning of the album name too
Conventional to have the record label details and when it was printed etc.
Must be on the CD - didn't have to be too big but must be placed perfectly on the edge of a CD
Photo I used for the inside
Placing it in such a way that it fills up the cover and doesn't get off by the spine of the CD either

I then used the synergy of the lips around the artist in different sizes. It gave it a "fun" and conventional "pop" look to it.

Planning Ancillary Products: Photos being used

This side profile of the artist will be used for the panel where there is a track list. The background will all be erased and coloured white so it seems like it's popping out. It keeps is simple too and allows her shirt to stand out even more.

The red bandanna is there for the synergy and so are the red lips. The artist can be used as a synergy too.

This will be the main picture used on the front of the CD cover because it is a clear close-up of the artist. As she is new, the audience need to know exactly what she looks like. The background will be removed so it is all white like the back panel and it will also make the colour of the shirt pop more.

The bands on her arm are colourful too and give the audience a sense of her cultural background. Her red bandanna and lipstick are visible for the synergy. The artist seems happy and jolly - also illustrates youth.

This long shot of our artist will be effective because she seems like she's "on the go". We see her in action in a way - presenting happiness, excitement and youth. (Conventional for pop genre).

The red bandanna is also visible for the synergy. The background will be removed to just white so the shirt pops out and is visible. This will be placed on the back panel of the CD.

This png of red lips will be used for the sort of "logo" for the artist's name and album title. It will be used for the title and on the CD as a significant symbol for the audience to recognise the artist.

Planning Ancillary Products: Costumes for digipak

Our artist will wear a colourful shirt because the background of my digipak will be a plain white setting. This will make it pop and stand out - which is generally what pop music does (it's funky and interesting to look at). Even though the outfit isn't the same as our music video, this is normal because we are basing the cd and advert around her whole album and not just one song. So the outfit must represent the personality of our artist overall.

She will have the red lipstick because it is our synergy and keeps it constant. My digipak has a theme of red lips too so it will link together well.

For my digipak, the artist will have the red bandana for the synergy to be continuous and it will be visible through out the whole of the digipak. Most pop artists like to make their synergies obvious. For example, the use of their tattoos etc.

Linking to the music video..

The colourful shirt links to the funky backgrounds on both the costume and locations in the music video. All pop videos conventionally have bright colours that stand out to grab the audience's attention. Also, most pop videos have a young audience and young artists so the bright colours illustrate youth.
