Research for music video: Function of a music video

Gun's N Roses' November Rain is a great example of a good music video especially for the rock genre. This video was made when the genre of Rock and Roll had certain expectations of big hair, big performance etc. When this video was made the expectations for a rock music video consisted of everything that this video showed. Not only does it establishes a story it also constantly shows shots of the band performing on a stage together and has individual shots of their instruments which is what the audience is expecting.

Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is a contrast although it is in the same musical genre as Gun's N Roses goes with a very different approach focusing the video more on the music than anything else. Keeping the video very simple with the band performing the song together in one location and not really have any further storyline within the video.
