"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly".
Breakdown of Mulvey's Theory
- "In a world ordered by sexual imbalance"
Literally this means that we are in a world where men have power while women do not.
- "pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female"
This means that men will do the looking while women are looked at making them appear as just an object for men to glare at.
- "The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly".
This last part of the statement means that whatever image the man has of women is then projected onto the woman. For example often the mans image which is being projected consist of something very sexual or where the woman is in scantily clad dressing and is often passive to the man.
